04.23.14 - According to Buena Vista County Sheriff Doug Simons on April 18, 2014 a report of a burglary to a residence in Albert City was made to the Sheriff’s Office.  Taken in the burglary were numerous firearms, electronics and military uniforms.

     A joint investigation of the Buena Vista County Sheriff’s Office with the Laurens Police Department and the Pocahontas County Sheriff’s Office into this incident has resulted in the arrest of a male and female from Marathon, Iowa.  Douglas Strange, age 28 of Marathon, was arrested April 21, 2014 in Laurens, Iowa by the Buena Vista County Sheriff’s Office.  Heidi Holston, age 26 of Marathon, Iowa, was arrested in connection with this investigation after a search warrant was executed at her residence in Marathon.

     During the course of the joint investigation the stolen weapons were recovered, along with some other stolen property from the burglary in both Buena Vista and Pocahontas Counties.  Total value of the items that were stolen was estimated at over $3000.00.  Heidi Holston has been charged with Possession of Stolen Property, Possession of a Controlled Substance and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.  Holston is currently being held in the Buena Vista County Jail.  Douglas Strange has been charged with four counts of Trafficking in Stolen Firearms, Theft 2nd Degree and Burglary in the 3rd Degree.  Strange is being held in the Buena Vista County Jail on a $10,000 bond.

     The investigation into this incident is continuing and more arrests are expected.

04-21-14 – According to Buena Vista County Sheriff Doug Simons on April 19, 2014 at approximately 8:26 P.M. the Buena Vista County Communications Center received a call from a rural Storm Lake resident reporting someone setting off homemade explosive devices on a gravel road North of C-49 on 100th Avenue.

     The caller was able to obtain the license plate on the vehicle and the subjects in the vehicle fled the scene. Deputies from the Buena Vista County Sheriff’s Office and the Storm Lake Fire Department were dispatched to the scene to investigate the incident.

     The homemade explosives were rendered safe at the scene and the State Fire Marshal’s Office was contacted to report the incident.

     During the course of the investigation the occupants of the vehicle that was seen fleeing the scene were identified as Arturo Castro II, age 18 of Ames, Iowa and a 14 year old male juvenile from Storm Lake.  At the conclusion of the investigation the 14 year old Storm Lake juvenile has been charged with Use of Explosives or incendiary devices, an aggravated misdemeanor, and Criminal Mischief 3rd Degree, an aggravated misdemeanor.  The juvenile was released to a family member pending a future court date.  Arturo Castro II has been charged with Use of Explosives or incendiary devices, an aggravated misdemeanor, Criminal Mischief 3rd Degree, an aggravated misdemeanor and Interference with Official Acts, a simple misdemeanor.  Arturo Castro II is was booked into the Buena Vista County Jail on $2000.00.

04.18.14 – According to Sheriff Doug Simons, an arrest has been made after an investigation of a dependent adult abuse.  In October of 2013, the Buena Vista Sheriff’s Office received a report from the Department of Human Services of the dependent adult abuse of an 89 year old Marathon, IA woman.  The investigation discovered that between May of 2012 and November 2013 over $49,000 worth of checks of the victim were misappropriated by the defendant.  The Buena Vista Sheriff’s Office obtained an arrest warrant for R. Neal Ruge, age 61, of Marathon, IA. 

 

On 04-17-14, the Laurens Police Department located Ruge and he was transferred to the custody of the Buena Vista Sheriff’s Office. 

Ruge was booked into the Buena Vista County Jail for Dependent Adult Abuse a Class D Felony, and Ruge was held on $5000 Bond. 

 

The Sheriff’s Office was assisted in the investigation by the Laurens Police Department, the Iowa Department of Human Services and the Buena Vista County Attorney’s Office.
